The Evolution of Imagery and Enabling Technologies

Imagery has come a long way from early efforts with primitive cameras in primitive aeroplanes. Large format cameras, stabilization and forward motion compensation made for imagery that could be used in a wide variety of mapping applications. GPS was a huge enabler in advancing the quality and efficiency of aerial photo acquisition.  Satellite imagery and its evolution provided more choice and economy of scale enabled applications previously thought too expensive. Affordable high resolution digital imagery coupled with modern affordable sensors such as GPS and Inertial has enabled new terrestrial, airborne and satellite sourced applications using multiple image sensors. This presentation will explore the evolution of imagery from the early days to present and what we have to look forward to in the future.

Roger Shreenan has over 20 years experience in the field of terrestrial, airborne (image/LiDAR) and satellite mapping for engineering and GIS applications.  As a Certified Engineer, Mr. Shreenan has been instrumental in operationalizing LiDAR techniques and technologies in more than 25 countries around the world covering a diverse range of vertical markets.  As the Vice President of Data Services for GeoDigital International, Roger is responsible for the management of the acquisition and production groups which consist of more than 50 professionals operating over 10 LiDAR sensors coupled with image and other accessories. Systems are operated from fixed wing, rotary and ground mobile platforms.
