What is Big Data? Why does it matter? Who uses it?

This prentation will serve to introduce participants to Big Data and will cover the following:

 

  • three main components of the field of Big Data and Analytics (BDA)

  • examples of the types of technologies being used

  • three categories of analytics that are being used today in organizations, along with examples of the managerial impact of these techniques

  • a conversation about the art of the possible in using BDA

Greg Richards is currently MBA Director and Director of the Centre for Business Analytics and Performance at the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management where he teaches courses on Organizational Performance Management and Management Consulting.   His current research focuses on the use of performance management techniques in public sector organizations, the use of information technology in delivering performance information, the role performance information plays in stimulating organizational learning and innovation, and the issue of “cognitive load” related to people’s decision-making processes.  He is a former public servant working with Transport Canada and Consulting and Audit Canada as an HR and Business Planning Consultant. As a result, he approaches the issue of performance in organizations from both systems and human perspectives.
