Commercial UAS in Canada - 2015

Mr. Baillie will summarize the current state of the Canadian civil/commercial UAS sector.  Touching on a few key examples, he will substantiate the economic value and promise of this technology.  He will also summarize the existing rules, guidelines and practices that govern the legal operation of these aircraft systems in Canada and the current issues that are being tackled to further improve the ability to safely exploit this technology.

After being raised in Calgary, Alberta, Mr Baillie received his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1981 and his Masters of Science in Aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology in 1982. 

 

For over 30 years, Mr. Baillie worked at Canada’s National Research Council; as a researcher, manager and ultimately Director of their flight test laboratory.  Over these years he was involved in a wide breadth of fixed and rotary wing flight test programs.  Since 2003 Mr. Baillie was also the main proponent of UAS technologies at NRC and he led the development of the NRC Civil UAS Program.  In 2013, Mr. Baillie retired from NRC and is now a private aeronautical consultant.

 

Mr. Baillie’s involvement with UAS didn’t stop with his departure from NRC.  He is very active with the industry in Canada, being a board member and the current Chairman of Unmanned Systems Canada.  Additionally he leads the Transport Canada subgroup to develop airworthiness regulations for UAS.
