The City of Ottawa Light Rail Tunnel Project

Bill Harper is the City Surveyor at the City of Ottawa and has been actively involved in the Mapping and Legal Survey aspect of the Light Rail Project dating back to the project planning phase in 2009. Bill has practiced as an Ontario Land Surveyor for over 25 years and has been with the City of Ottawa (former Region) for over 20 years.  Bill’s presentation will illustrate how Control Surveys, Mapping and Legal Surveys can all be leveraged through the use of a GIS and how this concept was implemented for the LRT project presentation will illustrate how Control Surveys, Mapping and Legal Surveys can all be leveraged through the use of a GIS and how this concept was implemented for the LRT project.

 

William Cavers, P.Eng., is an Associate and senior geotechnical engineer in the Ottawa, Ontario office of Golder Associates. He holds a M.Sc. in Engineering Mathematics with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering from Dalhousie University. Bill has been involved in a wide variety of geotechnical projects consisting of tunnels and infrastructure works including embankments on soft ground, deep excavations, LNG facilities, bridges, dams and storm water management facilities. In particular he has been very involved in the geotechnical aspects for Ottawa’s light rail transit system; both for the current construction and for the planning for Phase 2.  Bill’s presentation provides a general overview of what geotechnical engineers do, including a discussion of the natural processes that formed the soil and rock in the Ottawa area and how that relates to the type of construction activities in the City (such as the OLRT). presentation provides a general overview of what geotechnical engineers do, including a discussion of the natural processes that formed the soil and rock in the Ottawa area and how that relates to the type of construction activities in the City (such as the OLRT).
