Dr. Fai will speak about the range of work currently underway at CIMS, including digital recording (laser scanning, photogrammetry) and building information modelling (BIM) for buildings at Parliament Hill and lock stations on the Rideau Canal. Find out how geomatics is playing an increasingly important role in heritage preservation and reconstruction. Dr. Fai will be assisted by two researchers from the CIMS team: Lara Chow and Abhijit Dhanda. They'll show you how they are modelling heritage structures inside and out using imagery, LiDAR and special software. Eleanor Wang, the CIMS VR specialist will let you "stand" in the Senate Chamber. She's bringing her VR headset and sensors with her!
Dr. Stephen Fai is a modelling and simulation expert at Carleton University and a professor in the Azrieli School of Architecture, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture. He is the director of Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS), a research centre dedicated to the advanced study of innovative, hybrid forms of representation that can both reveal the invisible measures of architecture and animate the visible world of construction. At CIMS, Fai and his team of researchers explore and develop digital workflows for the architecture, engineering and construction industries. Research at CIMS integrates digitization, building information modelling (BIM), simulation and digitally assisted fabrication.
Lara Chow is a research assistant at CIMS and a PhD candidate at the Azrieli School of Architecture. She holds an M.Arch (Carleton) and a B.A.S. in Conservation and Sustainability (Carleton).
Abhijit Dhanda is a research assistant at CIMS. He holds a B.Eng. in Architectural Conservation and Sustainability (Carleton).
